ChatGPT's new credits can help you try a useful AI tool
Eligible ChatGPT subscribers can now claim credits for building with AI. Here is how to turn that opening into a useful first project.
Choose one job worth making easier before using your credits. A clear purpose gives your first AI tool a much better start.
A little room to try your idea
There is often a gap between enjoying AI in a chat and putting it to work inside a tool of your own. OpenAI's October 28 announcement offers eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers credits they can activate for building apps with OpenAI's API. That is the connection a custom app uses to ask AI to do a job.
The benefit has eligibility and activation requirements. It goes to one linked API organisation and is separate from your normal ChatGPT allowance. Check the offer in your account before planning around it. Having a qualifying subscription does not mean the credits have already arrived.

Give your first project a real job
Start with something you regularly wish were easier. Perhaps incoming requests take too long to sort, or someone has to turn a long update into a short handover. Write one sentence describing the result you want. Keep it close while you build.
For a first project, choose a result that a person can check before anyone relies on it. A tool that drafts a handover for review is easier to learn from than one that makes decisions for the whole team. You get to see where it helps and where your knowledge is still needed.
You can sketch the idea before connecting anything. Draw the screen, show what someone would put in, and write an example of the answer you would like back. That small piece of preparation makes the next conversation much clearer, whether you build with AI yourself or ask someone to help.
Try a handover helper
Write a made-up update about a piece of work. Include who is waiting, what is finished, and one unanswered question. Ask your AI building tool to make a simple screen that turns an update like this into a draft handover.
- Show the original update beside the draft so you can compare them.
- Check that names, dates, and unanswered questions stay accurate.
- Add a clear message for an empty or confusing update.
- Keep the draft for review rather than sending it automatically.
Keep the next step comfortable
Before using real information, understand what leaves your app, who can access it, and what happens when the credits run out. Keep private connection details out of public code. Ask for help with those parts if they are new to you.
Our view is that this offer is most useful as a chance to learn something concrete. A focused lesson can help you build the first version. If you would rather have the tool built for your team, your sketch and example already give a builder a clear place to start.
