Gemini makes a first useful AI project easier to try
You can now edit files inside a Gemini chat. A simple tracker is a friendly way to practise turning an idea into something your team can use.
Start with a small file you already understand. Make one useful change, check it, and learn from the result.
Your idea can stay beside the work
On October 29, Google announced that the Gemini app can create, preview, and edit files inside a chat. You can type changes yourself, highlight a passage to discuss it, or ask Gemini to revise part of the file.
Google says PDF editing works on the web and mobile. Documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and code are supported on the web. The update is available to personal Google accounts and Google Workspace customers wherever the Gemini app is available.
If you want to learn AI but have not known where to begin, this offers an approachable starting point. You can work on a familiar document and see each change while you make it.

Begin with a task you know
Think of a small task that repeats. Perhaps your team needs a clearer way to see which requests are waiting for a reply. Before asking for a whole app, try making a simple tracker in a spreadsheet.
Use five invented requests. Give each one an owner and a next action. Ask Gemini to create a sheet with those three columns, then look at whether the result would make the work easier to follow.
You might discover that you need a due date, or that two labels mean the same thing. These are useful discoveries. Your understanding of the work helps shape the tool.
Practise making a clear request
A helpful follow-up is specific: 'Add a column that shows whether we are waiting for a customer or for someone on our team.' You can then inspect that one change rather than judge a completely new file.
Try a small round of practice before using real work. Read the text, check any calculations, and make sure no invented details slipped in. A tidy file still needs your judgement.
- Choose one repeated task and describe the result you want.
- Make a first version using invented or approved information.
- Change one part, then compare it with your original request.
- Ask a colleague what would make the file more useful.
Let the first version teach you
A tracker may be all you need. It may also reveal a good reason for an app, such as giving each person a different view or sending an update when work is ready. You can decide after trying the simple version.
If you would like guidance, a practical AI session can help you turn those observations into a better brief. If you prefer us to build the tool, the same first version gives us something concrete to discuss. Either way, you begin with work you understand and a clearer idea of what should improve.
