Google checkout in Canada: confirm your store’s access

Google is rolling out purchases inside AI Mode and Gemini in Canada. Selected sellers can participate now, while broader Merchant Center onboarding is planned for next year.

The useful part

If you sell products into Canada, ask your commerce platform about your store’s current eligibility before commissioning a connection. Keep prices, stock and returns information current while wider access develops.

Check the route available to your store

If your business sells products to Canadian shoppers, confirm whether your commerce platform supports Google’s new checkout route for your store. That answer should come before a decision to pay for a custom connection.

Google began rolling out direct checkout in AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app in Canada on November 4. Eligible customers can complete a purchase from participating sellers without leaving those Google experiences.

The initial group includes lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and selected Shopify merchants. Being a Canadian seller or using Shopify does not by itself confirm that your store is included.

Separate current access from next year’s plan

The checkout uses Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP. It is a shared way for shopping assistants, stores and payment services to exchange the information needed for a purchase. Google and partners introduced the standard earlier this year; the new development is Canadian checkout access.

Google says simplified integration through Merchant Center will begin expanding access in Canada next year. Its onboarding guide currently describes a gradual United States rollout, with Canada and Australia to follow in 2027.

For a store outside the selected group, that makes this a planning decision. Ask your platform what it supports today and what still needs approval. Revisit a custom build when access and requirements are confirmed, rather than treating next year’s plan as a current launch date.

Keep responsibility for the sale

Google says retailers remain the seller of record. In plain terms, your business is still responsible for the sale even though checkout happens inside Google. Customers use supported payment and delivery details saved in Google Wallet through Google Pay.

Before enabling the route, have the commerce owner check how orders, delivery questions, refunds and customer support reach the team. Confirm any platform, payment-processing and implementation charges under your own agreement. The announcement does not establish one universal fee for every seller.

Loyalty rewards are described as a future addition. If your checkout depends on membership benefits, particular discounts or other special rules, confirm those requirements before making promises to customers.

Prepare the information you already control

Our perspective: this is an additional purchase route to assess, not evidence that you should replace a working store. Useful product information and a reliable order handover matter whichever screen a customer uses.

Google’s Merchant Center guidance recommends keeping product feeds and brand information accurate. We have not tested Canadian checkout or measured its effect on sales.

  1. This week, ask your commerce platform whether your specific store and products are eligible in Canada.
  2. Assign a person to check product descriptions, prices, stock, delivery and return information.
  3. If access is confirmed, test the order and support handover before promoting the new purchase route.
  4. If access is pending, prepare accurate product data and revisit when your platform or Google confirms onboarding.
