Say your app idea out loud, then make it clearer
Granola's new free voice typing on Mac offers a simple way to capture an idea. The useful next step is turning those spoken thoughts into a clear request.
Use voice typing to get the idea down, then review and shorten it. A clear description of the work helps both an AI tool and a human builder.
Start with the way you explain things
An idea can feel clear when you explain it to someone, then become harder to write down. Voice typing gives you another way to start.
Granola added voice typing on October 29. Its official help page says the feature is an early test version in the Mac app and is free in every plan. Speak while holding a shortcut key, then release it to insert formatted text where you are typing.
Granola advertises unlimited words, with a limit of 20 minutes for each dictation. Windows and mobile support are listed as coming soon, without a release date. These are the current terms, so check them before planning around the feature.

Explain the work before describing the screen
For your first app idea, talk about a person doing a real task. Explain where time is lost and what you would like to become easier. You can tidy the wording after the thought is on the page.
Granola adds punctuation and paragraph breaks and removes fillers and accidental repeats. It pastes your words into the app you are using. You still decide what to submit to an AI tool or send to another person.
Try explaining a simple request tracker using made-up details. Then review the text with these questions.
- Who needs to use the tool?
- What are they trying to finish?
- Which repeated step slows them down?
- What would a useful result look like?
Check the settings before using real work
Voice typing sends audio to the services Granola uses to turn speech into text and format the result. With Screen context enabled, it also sends limited text from the app you are dictating into. Granola lets you switch Screen context off while keeping dictation available, although app-specific formatting then stops.
Use a harmless example while learning and check the microphone settings, Screen context, and which dictation history is saved on your Mac. Read back names, dates, and important instructions before sharing the result. The aim is a helpful first draft that still says what you meant.
Give the next conversation a useful starting point
Once the idea is written down, shorten it to the few details another person needs. You can take that note into a training session, use it to guide an AI building tool, or share it with a builder.
Our view is that easier input is most useful when it helps you explain the work more clearly. Speaking can get you started. Your knowledge of the people and the task gives the project its direction.
