Build an AI feature that can grow with your choices

Vercel is making it easier to change the AI behind a feature. For builders, it is a reminder to keep the useful experience separate from the service supplying it.

The useful part

Choose the job your AI feature should do, then keep a clear way to review and change the service behind it.

The feature stays familiar while the AI can change

A useful AI feature should keep helping people as new services arrive. You might want to try a different supplier later, without changing the whole experience your customers have learned.

On October 28, Vercel introduced Virtual Models in AI Gateway, its connection service for AI tools. A team gives a task a fixed name and chooses which AI service sits behind it. Vercel says that choice and related settings can then change without editing and republishing the app's code.

The company also lets teams control who can change those settings. Some settings belong to a particular supplier, so Vercel advises reviewing them when switching. Easier changes still need a clear decision and a check of the result.

Describe what people should be able to rely on

For someone planning a business tool, the helpful starting point is the job. A feature might turn a long update into a short summary, or prepare a reply for a colleague to review. Write down the result people need before choosing the AI behind it.

Include what it must keep correct. A summary should preserve the names, dates, and decisions that matter. A reply should not promise something the business has not agreed to. Those expectations give you a way to judge a new option beyond whether its writing sounds impressive.

They also help when you work with a builder. You can explain the service you want to provide, while the builder plans how the parts connect and how a change can be reversed.

Save a few examples of good work

A small collection of approved examples can make future choices easier. Choose ordinary inputs, one confusing input, and an example where the right answer is to ask a person for help. Write what a useful answer would contain.

Keep these examples outside a particular AI chat. When a new service interests you, you already have something meaningful to compare. Use invented details or information you have permission to use while learning.

  1. Name one job the feature does for a customer or colleague.
  2. Save a few examples and describe what a good result includes.
  3. Ask how the AI service can be changed and who approves it.
  4. Keep a way to return to the previous choice if the new one disappoints.

You can learn the decision without learning every detail

Our perspective is that the ability to make a thoughtful choice will remain useful as AI products change. You do not have to follow every release. You can understand your own task well enough to ask better questions when a new option appears.

That is something to practise in training or build into a project with a studio. Ask for a feature you can understand, a clear record of its settings, and a sensible way to keep improving it.
