ChatGPT's account switcher can help keep work and practice apart

Move between work and personal ChatGPT accounts with less fuss on your phone. Start by deciding where your work and your learning belong.

The useful part

Choose a place for work and a place for practice, then check the active account before sharing information.

A clearer choice on your phone

Keeping a learning project separate from work is easier when the right account is easy to choose. A useful first step is to decide which account you will use for each.

On October 30, OpenAI announced that account switching is rolling out in the ChatGPT iPhone and Android apps. You can keep two accounts signed in and move between them without signing out. Only one is active at a time.

Each account keeps its own conversations, files, settings and subscription. Memory, the saved information that can shape replies, also stays with its account. The rollout is gradual, so the option may not appear in your app yet.

Make room for practice

You might use a personal account to practise describing an app idea, while keeping approved work conversations in the account your organisation provides. Try a made-up customer request or a fictional project brief. You can learn how to ask clearer questions without needing real customer details.

An account your organisation controls still follows that organisation's rules for access and data. Switching accounts does not change those rules. Check what information you are allowed to share before using it in a chat.

A second account can start on the Free plan. Paid subscriptions remain separate, so an existing subscription does not give both accounts the same paid access. Check the account that already owns a subscription before buying another one.

Try the switch once

Make the change familiar while the task is simple. You can use this short exercise when the feature appears.

Mobile notifications can arrive for both accounts. Opening a notification from the other account switches you into it, so a quick account check remains useful when you return to work.

  1. Decide which account you will use for work and which for practice.
  2. In the phone app, open Settings, choose Switch account, then Add account and sign in.
  3. Start a practice conversation using invented details. Check the account name before sending.
  4. Switch back and find a familiar work conversation. Repeat once so the choice feels natural.

A useful design lesson for your own app

Our view: a clear account choice is part of a helpful AI experience. If you are building a tool for other people, make it easy to see whose account is active and where work will be saved.

Ask someone to try a simple task in your early version. Can they tell which account they are using before they add information? Their answer can reveal a useful improvement before you build more features.

That is a practical question to bring to an AI training session or a conversation with your builder: where should this work happen, and how will the person using it know?
