A Claude speed setting is changing. Use the notice to plan well

Anthropic is removing fast mode for Claude Opus 4.8 on November 30. If your app uses it, start by checking the setting and planning a careful change.

The useful part

Find out which AI model and speed setting your app uses, then compare a supported option on familiar tasks before changing the live tool.

Start with one clear question

If an app your team uses depends on Claude, this is a useful moment to ask its builder which model and speed setting it uses. A clear answer lets you plan a change while there is time to compare the results.

On October 30, Anthropic announced that fast mode for Claude Opus 4.8 will be removed on November 30, 2026. The notice concerns the optional fast setting on this particular model.

For apps connected directly to Claude, requests that name claude-opus-4-8 and ask for fast mode will return an error after removal. Anthropic directs people who want to keep using fast mode to Claude Opus 5.5.

Work out what your app needs

Fast mode runs a supported model at a quicker text-output speed and has premium pricing. Anthropic says it does not change the model's intelligence or capabilities, and its speed benefit concerns text appearing after a response starts.

That gives you a useful question for the change: what pace does the person using your tool need? A longer answer appearing quickly may help in one task. A short, carefully checked result may matter more in another.

Check access, current prices and usage limits for your account before choosing a replacement. The notice is a reason to review your setup, rather than assume that switching a model name will settle every decision.

Compare on work you recognise

Use a separate test version of the app, with information you are allowed to use. Choose a handful of tasks whose good answers you can recognise. Include an ordinary request, an incomplete request and one that needs the tool to ask for clarification.

Write down what a useful result should contain before running the comparison. For a draft reply, that might mean answering the actual question, keeping promised dates accurate and leaving out information that was never provided.

  1. Ask the builder to confirm the current model and whether fast mode is enabled.
  2. List a few familiar tasks and the results you expect.
  3. Try a supported option in a test copy, checking quality, waiting time and cost.
  4. Review failures and decide what people should see if a request cannot finish.
  5. Agree who will make the live change, when it will happen and how it will be checked afterward.

Make the next change easier too

Our view: knowing the AI choices inside your app is part of owning it well. Keep a short record of the model, optional settings, running costs and the person responsible for changes. Add the next review date.

If you build with AI, ask it to explain where those choices are set, then have the explanation checked against the actual app. Understanding that connection is a useful skill to practise.

Whether you build yourself or hire a team, include these decisions in the handover. You will have a clearer conversation about upkeep, and a familiar set of checks ready when another change arrives.
