Kimi K2: plan your app’s service transition

Kimi’s own hosted service has closed K2 models to new registrations and plans to retire them by the end of December. Check your app’s supplier and arrange a tested replacement.

The useful part

Have the app owner confirm the exact Kimi service and model in use this week. Assign a technical owner to test a replacement, compare real usage costs and agree a switch before the announced retirement window ends.

Find the service your app actually uses

If your business app relies on Kimi K2, ask its technical owner to identify the supplier and exact model now. That gives you time to arrange a replacement while the existing service remains available to eligible accounts.

Kimi’s own service says K2-series models closed to newly registered users from October 31. It plans to retire the series by the end of December 2026. The notice does not give an exact final day.

This concerns the hosted service that software connects to, often called an API. It is not a notice that every Kimi subscription or every company hosting a Kimi model will stop on the same schedule.

Confirm the model and account

The current model list marks Kimi K2.6, K2.7 Code and K2.7 Code Highspeed as unavailable to new registrations, with retirement expected in late December. Older K2 versions have already been retired and should not be confused with this new transition.

There is a small difference in the account-date wording. The pricing notice says October 31, while the model list says users registered before November 1 can continue. If your account was created around that boundary, ask Kimi to confirm its access.

For an established account, the immediate task is preparation. A new account may already be unable to reproduce a setup that still works for the original account. Confirm access before promising a new deployment.

Choose a replacement on business evidence

Kimi points customers towards K3.1 Pro. Treat that as a replacement to assess, rather than proof that changing the name in an app will preserve every result.

Ask the technical owner to check the work your business depends on, including document handling, connected actions, response time and failure recovery where relevant. Compare those results with the current service before accepting the change.

Have the budget owner request a cost estimate based on representative usage. Kimi’s service charges by usage and distinguishes its billing from consumer memberships. Confirm current rates with the supplier before budgeting; we are not quoting a replacement rate or promising savings.

Give the transition a date and owner

Our perspective: the useful opportunity is to make this a planned supplier change. A clear owner, a tested replacement and a realistic support plan are more helpful than waiting for a failed request to reveal the dependency.

If another provider runs the model for you, check that provider’s own notice. This article does not establish its retirement date. We have not tested model compatibility.

  1. This week, record the app, supplier, model name and person responsible for the transition.
  2. Confirm the account’s current access and ask the supplier for its precise retirement schedule.
  3. Test a replacement with approved examples and compare accuracy, supported actions, response time and total usage cost.
  4. Agree a switch and recovery plan before the announced end-of-December window, leaving time to check the live business process.
