How to test computer vision and OCR with real images

Scope a system that reads text, identifies objects or flags images for review. Test it under the conditions it will see in normal work.

The useful part

Test clear, obscured and unfamiliar images and count how much human review the proposed threshold creates.

Collect the images people actually send

A system that reads a clean demonstration image may struggle with the photographs and scans people send during normal work. Before buying computer vision development services, collect representative examples and decide what the business needs to do with the result.

Computer vision interprets visual information. Optical character recognition, usually called OCR, extracts text from it. Reading a value and understanding whether that value is acceptable are different parts of the workflow.

Define the useful output

Identify the image or video source, the information needed and the action that follows. Decide whether the system should extract text, identify an object, flag a possible issue or help a person review material.

Image recognition development should have a clear set of categories and a process for cases outside them. Allow the system to return an unknown result and route those images for review.

Collect representative conditions

Include the cameras, lighting, backgrounds, image quality and document variations the team actually encounters. Record what the examples do and do not represent. Keep separate material for development and acceptance testing.

For visual inspection software development, include both acceptable and problematic examples, along with ambiguous cases a knowledgeable person must review. Have a qualified reviewer confirm the labels used to judge accuracy.

Distinguish text extraction from validation

Microsoft's OCR overview describes extracting printed and handwritten text from images and documents. It also makes language support and deployment options product-specific. Ask a supplier to demonstrate the selected service on your actual material.

Custom OCR development should specify what happens after text is read. A date may need a format check, an amount may need to match another record and a document may need review before it changes a business system.

For an illustrative acceptance exercise, compare a clear scan, a phone photograph, a partially obscured page and a document with an unfamiliar layout. Check the extracted values and whether the system correctly requests help when the result is uncertain.

Review the complete visual process

Video analytics development adds decisions about which moments to examine, how results are linked over time and how much material is retained. Define the specific business purpose and the access required before building a broad recording system.

A computer vision consultant should explain the tradeoff between missed cases and unnecessary reviews. Count how many reviews staff would need to handle at the proposed threshold. A system that needs frequent correction may still be useful, but its operating cost must include that work.

Plan the handover and updates

Record the supported conditions, acceptance results and known limitations. Assign responsibility for checking new image sources and reviewing performance as conditions change. Keep an accessible route for users to report an incorrect result.
