How to choose a mobile app development company

Decide whether the task needs an installed app, then compare developers on one complete journey, including device permissions and release ownership.

The useful part

Have competing developers demonstrate the hardest step on the intended devices before choosing a platform approach.

Start with the task people need on their phone

A mobile app should make an important task easier where people actually need to do it. Before comparing developers, describe the task, the device conditions and why an installed app would help more than a useful website.

Use that task as the starting point for the development brief.

Decide whether the task needs an app

Consider how often people return, whether they need device features and what should work when a connection is poor. A mobile website may be enough for an occasional request. An installed app can be appropriate for a repeated journey that benefits from the device and a continuing relationship.

For an illustrative field update, someone might need to capture a photo, record a status and send it when connectivity returns. Ask the developer to demonstrate what happens to the saved update if the person closes the app before the connection returns.

Scope one journey all the way through

Describe joining or signing in, the main task, confirmation and the next visit. Include denied permissions, interrupted payments, expired sessions and information that has not loaded. Decide what users can retry and what support can inspect.

Mobile app development also includes the accounts, business rules, storage, notifications and administration behind the interface. Ask which of those are included in the proposed build and which services require separate accounts or fees.

Compare platform approaches against the real requirement

iOS app development services and an Android app development company may propose separate platform-specific builds. Cross platform app development can share parts of the implementation. Compare both approaches on the task that depends most on the device.

Ask the supplier to demonstrate the difficult requirement on the intended devices. Compare accessibility, device integration, performance, release work and ongoing maintenance. Confirm who maintains any platform-specific parts even when most code is shared.

Include distribution and release preparation

The business should know which accounts will publish the app, who controls them and how release access is managed. Agree the information, assets and working access needed for review. Apple’s review requirements cover completeness and access to account-based features. Include demo accounts and review instructions in the release plan where required.

Approval timing is outside a developer's complete control. Separate a build being ready for submission from an app being available to users. Include the work needed to address legitimate review feedback and prepare future updates.

Evaluate a quote beyond its first launch

When you hire an app developer, ask about testing on real devices, accessible interaction, running costs, monitoring and maintenance as operating systems change. Confirm how crashes, failed journeys and customer feedback reach an owner.

Use a prototype to test whether people can complete the intended task before expanding the feature list. AI App Studio can help scope and build a mobile product around that journey. Book a call with the people it should serve and the task they need to complete.
