How to hire an outsourced software development team

Compare extra developers, a managed team and a defined project by who owns priorities, quality, release and handover.

The useful part

Ask who is accountable for a usable release and what evidence the business will see as the team delivers it.

Choose who will manage delivery

Hiring an external development team can add capacity, but the business still needs a clear owner for priorities and a clear understanding of what the supplier will deliver. Software development outsourcing should make that relationship easier to manage.

Start with the outcome, the work already understood and the decisions that remain open. Those determine whether you need people, a managed team or a defined project.

Distinguish additional people from managed delivery

IT staff augmentation supplies people who work within a management arrangement you provide. A dedicated development team may include its own delivery leadership and supporting roles. Ask who plans the work, reviews quality and resolves disagreements.

CodeLeap's dedicated-team service is one example of a supplier advertising managed delivery separately from staff augmentation. Other providers may use the same labels differently. The proposal should name the actual responsibilities.

If you hire a software development team without an internal technical owner, make sure the supplier is contracted to provide the leadership you are relying on. Ask the supplier to name who is accountable for a usable release.

Agree a complete delivery process

Specify how business needs become work, how estimates are reviewed and how changes are approved. Include design, testing, deployment and handover where the product needs them. Agree which demonstrations or test results the business needs to accept the work.

For an illustrative customer portal, a useful demonstration would show a customer submitting a request and staff handling it with the intended account roles. Ask to see the handoff between customer and staff in the same demonstration.

Evaluate location through the operating arrangement

An offshore software development company may offer a suitable team, but compare working hours, communication, decision turnaround and access to the people doing the work. Confirm when the people making technical decisions can talk to your team.

Ask how the team handles absences, specialist questions and staff changes. Record how knowledge is retained when somebody leaves. The business should not need to rebuild its understanding of the product each time the supplier changes a person.

Keep ownership visible throughout the work

Confirm the arrangements for code, design files, infrastructure accounts and business information. Agree when access is provided and what documentation is kept current. Plan for a future handover from the start rather than treating it as an emergency at the end.

An outsourced development team should be able to explain the state of the product, unresolved issues and what is ready to release. Keep that evidence where the business can access it.

Compare total delivery cost

Hourly or monthly rates do not include the same responsibilities in every quote. Identify management, design, testing, tools, operating costs and any minimum commitments. Agree the process for changing team capacity and ending the engagement.

AI App Studio can help choose a delivery arrangement and build a business product. Book a call with the outcome, current team and the responsibility you want an external partner to take on.
