How to plan website development or a CMS migration

Scope website development and migration around customer actions, publishing permissions, redirects and the performance people experience.

The useful part

Verify WordPress content, themes, plugins and connected services separately before switching traffic.

Define what visitors and editors need to do

A website project should make it easier for visitors to understand the offer and complete the next step. It should also leave the team able to keep important information current without depending on a developer for every sentence.

Before buying development or migration work, agree the customer journeys, content ownership and operating responsibilities that matter to the business.

Define the useful visit

Identify whether visitors need to compare an offer, request a conversation, buy something or use an account. Include the information they need before making that decision and how the next team receives their request.

Test complete journeys rather than reviewing a collection of attractive pages. A clear offer can still lose enquiries if a form fails, confirmation is missing or the request reaches nobody responsible.

Choose the publishing arrangement

A content management system, or CMS, lets the team maintain structured website information. CMS implementation services should define who can draft, review and publish, what they can change and how the design remains consistent.

Webflow development services and WordPress development services should be compared against those publishing needs and the required customer journeys. Confirm current plan features, third-party dependencies, hosting, access and maintenance in each proposal.

Headless CMS development separates content management from the website interface. Ask what benefit that separation brings to your work and who will maintain both sides. Test that editors can preview the published layout before choosing the arrangement.

Treat migration as a complete inventory

Website migration services should begin with the pages, files, addresses, forms and integrations that need to survive. Identify which content stays, changes or is deliberately removed. Include analytics and important links from other websites.

WordPress's export documentation describes content exported in an XML file. For a WordPress migration, list the theme, plugins, redirects and connected services separately from the content export. Verify each in the new environment before switching traffic.

Ask for a source-to-destination record so the team can check what moved. Test important old addresses and decide how their intended content should remain reachable. Avoid sending every removed page to an unrelated destination.

Review speed with the actual experience

Website speed optimization services should identify what is slowing useful interaction and show measured changes under stated conditions. Compare the same pages and test setup before and after the work.

Check the real mobile journey as well as a performance score. Large media, delayed forms and changing layouts can affect the experience differently. Preserve readable text, useful imagery and accessible controls while making the site faster.

Leave a maintainable site

Test forms, account access, payments where applicable, search, publishing permissions and recovery from errors. Give the business control of its domain, hosting, content and essential accounts.

The handover should explain routine publishing, supplier responsibilities and how updates are checked. Include continuing costs and the route for a future provider to take over the work.
