What to ask a cloud and DevOps consultant to own

Define who owns a cloud workload, what needs to move, how releases are approved and how the business will test recovery.

The useful part

Ask the supplier to rehearse recovery with data created after the deployment as well as the previous software version.

Start with the work an outage would interrupt

When a business depends on software, somebody needs to own how it runs, changes and recovers. Ask a cloud and DevOps consultant to spell out who owns each responsibility and how the business can verify it.

DevOps describes the work connecting software delivery and operation. The useful outcome is a dependable way to release changes and keep the service usable.

Start with what a failure interrupts

Identify the user journeys that matter, when people rely on them and what happens if they stop. Agree how quickly the business needs a response, what information can be recreated and how a recovery decision will be made.

AWS's reliability guidance connects architecture, change management and recovery. Those are useful areas to examine even when the service uses a different provider. Ask the operator to demonstrate how the service would recover after a failed release or loss of a dependency.

For an illustrative customer portal, the team may need to distinguish a slow page, an unavailable external payment service and a lost connection to stored documents. Each problem can need a different action and owner.

Specify what a migration includes

Cloud migration services should cover the application, information, access, connections and operational procedures moving together. Ask which dependencies will remain in the previous environment and how that affects the supposed simplification.

AWS consulting services and Azure migration services relate to particular providers. Confirm experience with the proposed environment and the actual workload. A successful demonstration using a different account structure or much simpler application may not establish fit.

Include a rehearsal, transition window, verification and a practical way to recover from an unsuccessful switch. Separate the build being deployed from the business accepting the service as usable.

Make releases controlled and repeatable

Continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) services set up repeatable checks and release steps for software changes. Ask which checks must pass, who can approve production changes and what happens when a deployment fails.

People need to know what version is running and how a previous version can be restored without losing legitimate new information. Rehearse the return to a previous version with data created after the deployment.

Tie monitoring to a response

Agree which failures produce an alert, who receives it and what service hours apply. A monitoring dashboard with nobody responsible for reacting is an unfinished operating arrangement.

Document account ownership, deployment access, backups and recovery instructions. Keep access limited to the work each person needs. The business should be able to understand how another competent team could take over.

Review cost alongside service quality

Cloud cost optimization services should identify what is being used, why it costs money and what would change if spending were reduced. Compare cost with workload and reliability, including supplier charges and support effort. Do not promise savings from an estimate that has not been tested against actual usage.
