How to brief a data analytics and dashboard consultant

Choose the decision the report must support, define the measures and check sample results before comparing dashboards or reporting platforms.

The useful part

Ask the decision owner to reconcile an ordinary record, a correction and an exception with the original source.

Agree what the numbers mean

A dashboard earns its place when it helps someone make a decision using numbers they understand. If several reports disagree, adding a new visual layer may make the disagreement easier to see without resolving it.

Data analytics consulting should start with the decision, the meaning of each number and the records used to calculate it.

Define the question and its owner

Choose a recurring decision, such as deciding which waiting work needs attention. Name the person who will act and what information would change their choice. A report containing everything available is harder to maintain and may still omit the important answer.

Write a definition for each measure. For an illustrative revenue report, specify whether a date refers to an order, a payment or the delivery of the service. Decide how refunds, cancelled orders and several currencies are handled. Otherwise, two correct calculations can answer different questions.

Find the source and the level of detail

Dashboard development services need to establish where information comes from, how records match and how often they change. Joining a customer list to a transaction list can multiply rows if the relationship is misunderstood.

Microsoft's Power BI guidance explains the importance of the underlying data model and consistent detail in the records being summarized. Business readers do not need to design that model themselves. They should ask a supplier to explain the matching and calculation decisions in examples they can check.

Compare an agreed sample with the original records, including a correction and an exception.

Choose a reporting platform after understanding the task

Power BI consulting and work with a Looker Studio consultant involve different platforms and environments. Business intelligence consulting may also include data preparation, shared definitions and the operating process behind the report.

Confirm who connects sources, prepares information, controls access, refreshes the report and maintains calculations. Confirm the licences and sharing arrangement needed by the people who will use it.

Design for incomplete and stale information

Automated reporting services should show when information was last updated and what has failed or remains missing. A blank card, an old value and a true zero should not look identical.

Decide who investigates a failed update and whether the report can still support a decision. For an illustrative daily workload view, yesterday's backlog may be informative, but it should not silently present itself as the current queue.

Keep the result useful after delivery

The handover should include measure definitions, source ownership, refresh responsibilities and a process for changes. At the next review, ask the decision owner what action they took based on the report.
