How to scope EDI integration across trading partners
Scope electronic data interchange around transaction states, record mapping and what each partner does when messages fail or repeat.
Photo unavailableInterrupt a test transaction after one side accepts it, then verify that replay leaves both systems with one correct record.
Follow one transaction between the two businesses
An order arriving automatically is useful when it becomes the correct record, reaches the right team and can be reconciled with later changes. Use that journey to scope EDI integration services.
Electronic data interchange, or EDI, lets organizations exchange structured business records. The implementation needs an agreed meaning for the records on both sides.

Follow one transaction end to end
Choose the message types and trading partners involved. Describe what begins the process, which system owns the resulting record and how the recipient confirms it was accepted.
Include amendments, cancellations, partial completion and records arriving in an unexpected order. A process designed only for the first successful order can leave staff reconciling the difficult cases by hand.
Agree the mapping and identifiers
EDI consulting should establish how customer, supplier, product and document identifiers correspond between systems. Decide how missing or unrecognized values are handled before a transaction changes operational records.
Keep the rules accessible to the people who understand the business. A technical field map is useful alongside an explanation of what the values mean and who can approve a change.
Choose the integration approach
A Boomi consultant, provider of MuleSoft integration services or provider of Workato implementation services should explain the proposed platform's role in the wider process. Confirm the actual connectors, licences, hosting and operating responsibilities required.
Epicor advertises integration, consulting, managed operation and training as separate EDI service areas. Ask which of those jobs your proposal covers and who handles the others.
Ask whether an authorized existing interface or service can cover the job before commissioning a custom component. Compare options using the same transaction and exception cases.
Test acknowledgements and repeated messages
For an illustrative acceptance exercise, send a test order, receive its acknowledgement, change part of it and complete it in stages. Reconcile the final result in both systems.
Repeat a message and interrupt the connection after one side has accepted the record. Verify that the receiving system keeps one transaction and can explain the repeated message. Make failures visible to the team that can resolve them.
Decide who owns recurring operation
EDI managed services should identify monitoring, failed-message handling, partner changes and service hours. Establish who communicates with the other organization when a problem needs investigation on both sides.
Agree how sensitive records are protected and how much operational history is retained. The team needs enough evidence to investigate a dispute or missing transaction without collecting information indefinitely.
Keep the handover complete
Document trading-partner settings, mappings, credentials ownership and acceptance tests. Include usage costs and the work required when a partner adds a new record type or changes its requirements.
