How to scope an MCP connector for an AI assistant

Connect an AI assistant to business information or tools while keeping each request inside the user’s access and approval rules.

The useful part

Test two users with different permissions and check what happens after a duplicate or partial update.

Start with one action the assistant should perform

An assistant becomes more useful when it can find approved information or perform an agreed action in the tools a team already uses. Decide whose request it handles, which information it can see and what it can change.

MCP server development services provide one way to build these connections. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, a standard for exchanging context and tool capabilities with AI applications.

Start with a business action

Choose a task such as finding an approved record, preparing an update or checking the status of work. Define the information needed and the result the user should receive. Separate reading information from changing it.

A connector proposal should explain why a new connection is needed. An existing authorized integration may already cover the task. Compare configuration, a custom connector and a separate application against the same outcome.

Understand what the standard covers

The official MCP architecture describes clients and servers exchanging context and exposing capabilities such as tools and resources. It does not decide whether a particular business action is appropriate or how an application should use a model.

Model Context Protocol consulting should therefore include the surrounding application, access model and operating process. A standards-compatible connection still needs testing against the business's rules.

Match the connection to the actual assistant

A custom ChatGPT connector, Claude MCP integration or another assistant connection should be scoped against the current capabilities of the selected product and account. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the real environment you intend to use.

MCP integration services should identify the supported clients, authentication, information sources and actions. Verify reading, writing and approval in each assistant and account you plan to support.

Keep the user's authority attached to the request

Define who may read each record and who may approve a change. Use the requester’s access or a separately constrained service identity, depending on the task. Include a process for removing access when responsibilities change.

For an illustrative test, have two users request the same customer information when only one should be allowed to see it. Then test an approved update, an update requiring confirmation and a request outside the connector's scope.

Test incomplete actions and misleading inputs

AI tool integration services should account for an unavailable system, a duplicate request and an action that completes only partly. The user needs an understandable result and a safe next step.

Check that instructions found in documents or tool responses cannot expand the user’s permissions. Test how the complete assistant handles unexpected content before allowing consequential actions.

Agree continuing operation

Document ownership, hosting, monitoring, usage costs and the response when a connected product changes. Keep credentials under the business's control and provide a route for another supplier to maintain the connection.

AI App Studio can help connect an assistant to a useful, bounded business task. Book a call with the assistant, system and action you want to join.
