How to scope software architecture reviews and technical due diligence

Scope a technical review around the software, accounts, team and AI dependencies you need to understand before committing.

The useful part

Trace one important customer journey through code, access, release and recovery, and ask which gaps could change the decision.

Name the investment decision the review should support

Before buying, expanding or taking responsibility for a software product, the business needs an understandable account of what it owns and what continuing work it creates. Ask for evidence from the software, the people running it and the accounts they depend on.

Software architecture consulting, software audit services and technical due diligence services answer related but different questions. Choose the decision the review must support before agreeing the scope.

State the decision and its limits

An architecture review may compare approaches for a planned product or change. A code audit examines specified implementation concerns. Technology due diligence can inform a wider commitment involving the product, team, suppliers and operating requirements.

Write down the questions the decision-maker needs answered. Identify what evidence will be available and the parts the reviewer cannot examine. State the parts inspected and which unanswered questions could affect the decision.

Establish what is actually controlled

Record the source repositories, hosting, domains, databases, external services and administrative accounts involved. Confirm who controls them and what a handover would require.

Assemblysoft advertises software audits for acquisitions, modernization and operational decisions, including assessing what an organization owns. This is an example of a supplier's stated service scope. The actual review still needs evidence from the product under consideration.

Review changeability and operation

Code audit services should connect findings to a business consequence, such as the effort to change an important workflow or the difficulty of investigating a failure. Ask for examples and the basis of any effort estimate.

Include the release process, tests, monitoring, recovery and the people required to operate the system. A maintained product depends on those arrangements as well as the code itself.

Examine important external dependencies

IT due diligence should identify the suppliers, contracts and specialist knowledge the software depends on. Have the appropriate business and legal specialists assess ownership and contractual questions; the technical reviewer should make the dependencies visible.

AI due diligence adds questions about models, data sources, evaluation, usage costs and the handling of unsupported outputs or actions. A working demonstration should be accompanied by evidence about representative use and known limitations.

Ask for a decision-ready report

Separate confirmed findings, reasonable inferences and unanswered questions. Prioritize actions by their business effect and explain what additional evidence would change the conclusion.

For an illustrative review, choose one important customer journey and trace its implementation, access, release and recovery arrangements. Record which parts were inspected and tested. Use the result to decide which other journeys need their own review.

Keep the next step proportionate

The review might support proceeding, narrowing scope, obtaining missing evidence or choosing another approach. Avoid treating a large issue count as a verdict without considering severity, context and the work required.

AI App Studio can help review a software investment and turn the findings into a practical plan. Book a call with the decision, available evidence and responsibility you are considering.
